BSc Thesis

Creating a game with dynamic difficulty and reinforcement learning. Student: João Gabriel Basi Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Roberto Hirata Jr. Introduction Player versus environment (PvE) games, in contrast to player versus player (PvP) games, are games where the player fights several enemies controlled by artificial intelligences in order to fulfill the game’s objectives. In this style, developers commonly model enemies as autonomous agents, since they make decisions without human intervention. The creation and balancing of agents occupies a good part of PvE game development, since a large portion of the game experience is provided by them. For the game to become interesting, it is desirable that the agents offer challenges easy enough so that the player does not get frustrated, hard enough so that they do not get bored, and that there are new challenges at each stage.

Global Game Jam 2019

A 48-hour gobal game jam. IME hosted a site and we divided USPGameDev into two groups. My group created “Mother’s home”, a game where you are a little creative kid that adventures through an imaginary maze in his house to play with his toys, but don’t want to get far from his mom. The theme was “What home means to you?”, and the game explores how the house feels like an unknown place to the kid, as his mother is his real home.

In this jam we made “Mechamorphosis”, a game where you are a rusty robot that was captured by an evil organization that wants to turn you and your friends into mechanical waste. The goal is to aquire new parts to yourself, defeat all the guard robots and escape the building. The theme was “Sacrifices must be made”, we created a mechanic where you have to sacrifice a part and get a new one to get to the next room. Some parts give you buffs and other debuffs, and you have to deal with them through the game.

To make sure this doesn’t happen anymore, you heve to help her to fix the the church’s clock. The theme was “Finally, now i’m truly free”, and the jam also had some achievements (like optional sub-themes), and we acomplished two of them:

Pirate Ship Battles

An io-like online multiplayer, where you control a pirate ship and have to shoot other people’s ships to destroy them. It’s a browser game, that can be played either from desktop or from mobile devices. The project had two phases. I contributed a lot for the first one, but after that it was used as an agile methodology classes’ project, that I was not enrolled, so I stopped contributing to it and started supporting the other developers’s work.
